Casa Ellul — Phase 1

Valletta

Casa Ellul is one of the most luxurious Valletta boutique hotels, situated right in the heart of Malta’s capital City. Originally a Victorian-period Palazzo, this small luxury boutique hotel in Valletta expresses a classical yet stylish design, inspired from a combination of past Baroque influence and present chic elegance. This upscale sophistication is reflected in walls soaked in art and plush, prestigious antiques, traditional Maltese wooden balconies and contemporary private terraces with breath taking views.

The experience of lodging in a classic Victorian period house on the lower floors in contrast with the contemporary spaces on the rooftop was the prevailing design concept: from the hotel’s layout, to its complex services infrastructure, to the interior detailing and furnishing.

This upscale sophistication is reflected in walls soaked in art and plush, prestigious antiques, traditional Maltese wooden balconies and contemporary private terraces with breath taking views.

Whilst retaining most of the original fabric and keeping alterations in to a minimum, the rooftop extension is encased in a louvered ‘hat’ — inspired from traditional persjani — wrapping around the top suites, whilst also providing a screen for outdoor services. The project was awarded the 2015 Din l-Art Helwa ‘Prix d’Honneur’ for best entry in the rehabilitation & re-use category, deemed to be “executed with incredible flair and sensitivity to the house’s past”, according to the judges.

SAW Ltd has helped to enhance this project through the provision of internal and external apertures, reception and restaurant complete fit out, partition cladding with moulding, fire doors, guest rooms furniture and external louvered wall cladding.

This project was designed by Chris Briffa Architects.
